Intern Profiles

Benefits

Internships are unpaid, but lunch and transit expenses are reimbursed. Action Against Hunger - USA covers lunch expenses up to $10/day ($15/day for international interns) for a full day in the office, and a monthly subway card for those who assist us at least 20hrs per week.

Communications Intern

Like Action Against Hunger itself, the External Relations Department is constantly growing and changing to meet the new and expanding needs of the organization. Responsible for all private fundraising, press communications, corporate partnerships, and major events, the External Relations Department offers a rich, fast-paced team environment with lots of opportunity to learn about the workings of a large, international humanitarian aid organization.

Essential Functions and Objectives

The Communications Intern will assist with projects designed to help promote Action Against Hunger’s humanitarian work and messages through the press and various public media.

Tasks and Responsibilities May Include

  • Organizing Action Against Hunger’s multimedia resources including video and photographs;
  • Tracking and researching coverage in the media;
  • Building and updating press contact lists;
  • Contributing to the online newsletter ‘Response’ and other publications;
  • Assisting with the preparation of upcoming events;
  • Maintaining social networking sites including myspace, youtube, and facebook.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • University/College student or graduate
  • Experience with Windows and Macintosh operating systems
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish a plus
  • Minimum commitment of 15-20 hours/week
  • Journalism, Communications, or International Studies students/graduates preferred.

Events Intern

Action Against Hunger is looking for an Events Intern who is ready to jump in to a fast-paced working environment.

Like Action Against Hunger itself, the Development and Communications Department is constantly growing and changing to meet the new and expanding needs of the organization. Responsible for all private fundraising, press communications, corporate partnerships, and major events, the Development and Communications Department offers a rich, fast-paced team environment with lots of opportunity to learn and pursue new projects.

Overview

The Events Intern will support the activities of the Development and Communications Department by: reaching out to constituents and building relationships with volunteers and others interested in Action Against Hunger's work; helping to organize fundraisers and educational events in New York and across the country; and helping with the daily operations of the Development and Communications Department. This internship is ideal for anyone interested in awareness-raising, event planning, fundraising, and volunteer outreach for a non-profit, as well as the administration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Duties

The Events Intern will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Communicate with volunteers around the country who are interested in holding educational/fundraising events, and provide them the appropriate materials and information.
  • Assist with the planning and follow-up of events such as the World Food Day Gala and the Restaurants Against Hunger Campaign, while developing new ideas for events and volunteer opportunities.
  • Support the Development and Communications Department on other miscellaneous projects.
  • Participate in the Development and Communications team's strategy meetings, brand development, marketing decisions, etc.
  • Attend brown bag lunches, public education events, and staff meetings.

Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and outward presence.
  • Ability to work independently with guidance from staff members, with an interest in international humanitarian issues, event planning, volunteer outreach, and/or fundraising.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficient in Word and Excel. Database experience.

Human Resources Intern

Objective

To assist the Human Resources department in developing, maintaining, and organizing activities, while providing a practical learning experience to students interested in Human Resources in a quickly growing non-profit organization and in the general workings of an international humanitarian aid organization.

Overview

The Human Resources Intern will support the activities of the Human Resources Staff. S/he will learn how the organization recruits and places field and headquarters staff, and the general activities of a human resources department. S/he will also have the opportunity, through working in the office, to learn about Action Against Hunger’s (AAH) programs, and how it operates in the United States. This internship is ideal for anyone interested in human resources for a non-profit, as well as the administration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Duties

The Human Resources Intern will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Printing resumes, contacting accepted candidates, organizing interviews.
  • Updating HR materials for employees.
  • External job and newsletter positing on recruitment websites.
  • Assisting in editing and posting HR content on the website.
  • Assist with strategic planning and publishing of the jobs against hunger e-newsletter.
  • Research on universities, programs, forums and associations for the purpose of targeting active recruitment.
  • Making initial contacts with various universities and organizations.
  • Compiling an HR package to send out to organizations and schools.
  • Maintenance of Human Resource Statistics.
  • Maintenance of Human Resources Database.
  • Various clerical duties.
  • Assistance to the department staff on various administrative tasks.

Depending on the ability and autonomy of the candidate more responsibility may be assigned.

Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Monthly Operations Newsletter

  • Two parts: (a) context (country developments) (b) AAH-USA activities
  • Attend weekly Operations meetings, identify main developments
  • Arrange meetings with Operations staff to receive updates on specific technical areas
  • Last week of the month- compile info for internal (HQ/Mission) newsletter

Press Reviews

  • Check news everyday for each US mission
  • Relief Web, IRIN, BBC, Google News, All Africa, etc.
  • Email in zip file a document containing major news articles to the appropriate mission

Operations meeting

  • Attend weekly join Human Resources / Operation meeting, take minutes
  • Attend weekly Country Operation meeting, take minutes

Research

  • To follow up on emergencies in a specific regional area
  • To produce a detailed report on a selected country
  • Review of literature, NGOs, etc.

Assist with Report and Proposal Editing

  • In collaboration with the technical departments, format and edit reports from the missions.
  • Prepare Final Reports and Surveys for the Website
  • In collaboration with the Desk Officers, format, edit and prepare the reports to be disseminate by the communications department
  • Assist with Research and Additional Tasks as Determined by the Department

Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with guidance from staff members.
  • Interest in context analyses humanitarian operations.
  • Degree in International Affairs, Political Sciences, Anthropology

Preferred Skills
