American's best restaurants are joining forces to battle hunger around the world. The Restaurants Against Hunger fundraising campaign was created by Action Against Hunger, an organization that helps vulnerable populations gain their self-sufficiency, to honor World Food Day. Now in its 23rd year, World Food Day is a United Nations designated day observed worldwide to mark the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on October 16, 1945. World Food Day encourages all sectors of society to increase awareness, understanding and year-round action for the critical issue of hunger.
"The challenge posed by World Food Day is Herculean: 800 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished; 200 million children age five and younger suffer from acute and chronic malnutrition; each year 30 million babies are born with impaired growth because their mothers were inadequately nourished," said Anne-Sophie Fournier, Executive Director of Action Against Hunger USA, "Today and every day, Action Against Hunger--USA applauds all efforts, large and small, that serve to reduce these appalling numbers."
The roster of restaurants and star chefs participating in this year's Restaurants Against Hunger program include:
- Antoinette Bruno, StarChef.com - New York, NY
- Chef Kim Sklar - Los Angeles, CA
- Xavier Noel, Paris Gourmet - Boston, MA
- Chef Eric Ripert, Le Bernardin - New York, NY
- Claude Solliard, Seppi's - New York, NY
- Chef Alain Eigenmann, Vatel Club - New York, NY
- Chef Tom McCauley, Miracle Bar and Grill - New York, NY
- Chef Charles Phan, Slanted Door Restaurant - San Francisco, CA
- Rick Smilow, Institute of Culinary Education - New York, NY
Restaurants Against Hunger began in 2002 when New York's Miracle Bar and Grill raised $10,000 for Action Against Hunger during a 3-day event. In 2004, ACF is expanding its impact by bringing Restaurants Against Hunger nationwide to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Both Restaurants Against Hunger and the World Food Day Gala, an annual ACF fundraising event, raised an estimated $300,000 in 2003. This year's gala will take place on October 5 at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. Honorary guests include former South African President Nelson Mandela, Marten E. Franklin of Jarden Corporation and Dr. Yvonne Grellty of ACF.
