Security Incident in Northern Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya — On the morning of Saturday December 18 2004 Action Against Hunger (ACF) staff traveling in 3 cars between El Wak and Wargadud were ambushed by a group of 5 unidentified gunmen men. ACF regrets to inform you that during the attack, Mr. Sahal Rashid Abdi, a contracted driver who was transporting the staff was shot and killed during the ambush. ACF staff involved in the incident have been accounted for and escorted back to El Wak.

Action Against Hunger would like to offer its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Abdi.

A current investigation of the attack has been initiated and local authorities in Mandera Town, Wargadud and El Wak have initiated a quick response and coordinated effort. ACF wishes to thank those local authorities and NGOs who have given our organization a great deal of support.

Action Against Hunger activities in the area have been suspended until further notice except for the life saving activities of the Mandera Therapeutic Feeding Center.
