ACF Provides Thousands of Liters of Water in Haiti

Organization restores clean water access for 30,000 people in Port-au-Prince, launches emergency programs in Gonaives and Leogane

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last week, Action Against Hunger | ACF International is rushing to provide access to clean drinking water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.

ACF has installed water points in the badly damaged Champ de Mars and Canape-Vert neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, which are providing clean water to 30,000 people congregated there, and has nearly completed emergency water distributions in the capital’s Croix de Pres district and at the national stadium.

In response to the urgent needs of earthquake survivors that fled Port-au-Prince for the neighboring city of Gonaives, the international humanitarian organization is launching an emergency intervention to distribute water to local hospitals and health centers. The recent influx of earthquake survivors has put an enormous strain on the city’s resources and infrastructure, affecting those displaced from Port-au-Prince, as well as residents of Gonaives.

“Not a single drop of water is available in the K-Soleil hospital in Gonaives,” said Lucile Grosjean, a spokesperson for Action Against Hunger. “Doctors and nurses have no water to wash their hands, and patients are desperately thirsty. Relatives are trying to buy water in the streets, but with little money available and prices doubling in most regions, it is nearly impossible to find drinking water.”

Meanwhile, in Leogane, a town on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince that was more than 80% destroyed by last week’s earthquake, the agency is preparing to restore access to drinking water for a population of 125,000 by rehabilitating water points and establishing treatment facilities. This latest natural disaster has further damaged the region’s water network, which had been severely weakened during the cyclones of 2008.

ACF’s 120 strong-team in the country is working with local volunteers to manage the security and effective distribution of water to devastated communities.

Action Against Hunger has implemented programs in Haiti since 1985, carrying out emergency measures in the areas of health and nutrition. Since 2001, ACF has focused primarily on food security and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs in both emergency and development contexts in Port de Paix, Gonaives, Anse Rouge and Jeremiah.
