Where We Work

Sudan

sudan.jpg

From 1993 to 2005 Sudan was torn apart by a civil war and between secessionists on the South and the government in the North. ACF launched its first mission in the country in 1985 and has assisted the population since then. In 2003, another conflict broke out in Darfur, which turned into the largest humanitarian crisis of the century. ACF-IN is very active in the region.

Humanitarian Context

The civil war in Sudan, which began 21 years ago, has claimed two million lives and has led to the displacement of four million people. Sudan has one of the largest numbers of ethnicities (over 100) and languages among African countries. The Sudan conflict has complex ethnic-religious causes. Most of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed during the conflict.

The country is also exposed to harsh environmental conditions, with long periods of drought and flooding every year. Sudan has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world.
