- The estimated death toll of the Khmer Rouge's genocidal military regime and the conflict with Vietnam is more than a million, among the victims political opponents, students, monks and community leaders
- It is calculated that there are between 6 and 10 million landmines scattered indiscriminately across all regions of the country. Cambodia probably has the highest number of landmine amputees in relation to the size of population in the world: one amputee for every 236-425 people. Estimates of the total number of amputees in the country vary between 18,000 and 40,000.
- Minefields , floods and drought are constant threats to the production of rice, Cambodia 's staple food.
- Medical problems include the risks of epidemics and the rapid spread of HIV/ AIDS
- 75% of the workforce is employed in subsistence agriculture.
