Humanitarian Context

  • Since 1998 and after the forced resignation of president Suharto, Indonesia has been unstable - presidents elected for short periods, and increase in terrorist attacks and precarious security situations in several provinces such as Aceh, Kalimantan, Moloccas and Sulawesi.
  • Action Against Hunger had launched programmes for the most vulnerable in the province of Mollocas, in direct collaboration with local authorities until 2002. In Jakarta, our teams worked in cooperation with populations living at low altitudes in order to improve their capacity to deal with flooding.
  • Already weakened by these internal conflicts, Indonesia was directly hit by a tidal wave provoked by an earthquake near its coasts.
